Jochen Schweitzer

Since his early teens in country Germany, Jochen has been curious to understand how things work and how to make them better: taking apart household appliances, looking into gearboxes, asking many questions and spending days in his father’s workshop fixing and building stuff were a cornerstone of his upbringing. Over the years, he expanded from this initial fascination with technical solutions to studying the larger context and creating human-centred innovations to complex social problems. Collaborative human ingenuity is at the heart of what interests Jochen.

Jochen is Assistant Professor of Strategy and Marketing at the Business School of the University of Technology, Sydney and co-founder of u.lab, a multidisciplinary innovation hub. He holds a postgraduate degree in Industrial Engineering and a PhD in Strategic Marketing. Previously he has worked as a management consultant, production-planning engineer and cultural program coordinator in Australia, Europe, Central and South America.

Jochen has extensive professional experience in business planning, organisational transformation and change management. His work now focuses on teaching and researching strategic management, collaboration, entrepreneurship and innovation with a special interest in design thinking and social enterprise. His professional knowledge and research expertise allow him to offer both a scientific and a very practical perspective.

He always enjoys meeting people and making new connections. While he spends the most time in Sydney, he takes pleasure in regular visits to other favourite places including Berlin, Vancouver and New York. In his spare time he likes to go surfing, rock climbing or cycle touring with his young family.

Jochen is excited to be part of the d.school teaching team since every day at d.school provides a great opportunity to learn and share amazing insights and energy.
