Foundation Idea
IT-Systems Engineering: a new discipline
In the Institute for Software Systems Engineering, Prof. Hasso Plattner´s foundation has created an academic research institution that, while independent of industry, nevertheless gears its teaching and research activities to the real needs of the IT sector. It is helping to establish IT-Systems Engineering as a scientific discipline. By offering first-class education and research facilities, the Institute sets out to promote the emergence and growth of an engineering culture in the software industry.
By engineering culture in the IT sector, we mean the close alignment and interlinkage with business processes, for example. In this context, modeling of software design and documentation and methods for software system description play a central role. Both help us as software engineers to communicate better and more understandably with non-experts. IT engineers are thus able to exchange experiences as quickly and accurately as their colleagues in the fields of machine-building or electrical engineering. Furthermore, our IT-Systems Engineering program gives priority to early prototyping and the utilization of reusable components.
