Challenges for Computational Sciences

tele-TASK-Aufzeichnung des Vortrags

Today, Computational Sciences are regarded as a key technology, both on a scientific and on an economic scale. The latest PITAC report is just one strategic paper out of several ones that emphasizes this fact. While hardware progress and improved algorithmics have been the dominant enabling technologies for Computational Sciences for decades, there seems to be a growing understanding that software engineering might be the future core issue, forcing two communities having basically ignored each other so far to co-operate.

The talk provides an overview of Computational Sciences and High-Performance Computing as disciplines, discusses the most important current bottlenecks, and addresses the need for a stronger software-orientation - including typical problems and possible remedies.
