Project: Impact of latency on performance in Multicore Systems

Abstract: Large scale platforms suffer from a higher remote data access penalties which can cause performance degradation. Such systems might need a smart OS that will know how to schedule threads close enough to reduce the communication overhead, however current operating systems are unaware of those connections and the most novel OS focus on load balancing instead of taking into account the relations between threads. The goal of our research is to understand when the communication overhead due to poor thread placement or poor data locality is significant and can cause a reduced IPC.
