Project: Detecting Biographical Barriers - Testing and putting beta diversity on a map

Abstract: Biodiversity can be measured on three different scales: genes, organisms and landscapes. Diversity of organisms is the most common measure and often used for biogeographical questions as well as for a variety of conservation applications (e.g. see Penner et al. 2011). Normally a trait off exists between the need for fine grained and the need to cover large areas. We used Environmental Niche Modelling to build a fine grained (30x30 arcseconds ≈ 1km²) map of species richness (≈ alpha diversity) for West African using 158 out of the 180 known amphibian species of the region. Inspired by McKnight et al. (2007) we are currently calculating species turnover (≈ beta diversity) for the region. The main aim is to identify biogeographical boundaries which are reflected by relatively high species turnover.
