Project: Live Migration Impact on Datacenter Performance

Abstract: Live migration is one of the powerful features in virtual datacenter. Hosts load balance, power saving, fault tolerance and dynamic resource allocation are all dependent on having live migration for the virtual machines. However live migration process overheads the physical resources of the datacenter; like CPU, memory and network. So studying and modeling live migrations is important to predict its impact on the datacenter performance and to take the migration decision at the optimum times. This is to avoid conflict of interest between the application usage for resources and live migration overhead. This may results in adding a feature to live migration service; which is alerting the network admin with the live migration cost before proceeding with it, and so the networks admin may cancel the migration request if it may impact a running application, replication or backup activities.
